ASMSU-specific D.C. Advocacy Trip
For the past two years I have attended, and sometimes led the ASMSU delegation to an April D.C. advocacy trip. (This year excluded due to coronavirus.) This has always been as a part of a trip with the other 13 Big Ten schools, and we advocate on a shared platform with them. However, I want to lead ASMSU in the fall on a trip where we are able to advocate for MSU specific points. We have the room in the budget, as I have been keeping a close eye on any unnecessary or frivolous spending.
1) This will give more GA reps, CORES/COPS members, class councils, and staff of ASMSU an opportunity to attend and experience direct advocacy to legislators.
2) We will be able to advocate to Senators and Congresspeople in person on issues specific to MSU students. It certainly doesn't hurt that Michigan's two Senators are both MSU alums (GO green!).
Continued Advocacy Days and Efforts
In the past, each spring we have "advocacy days" where GA reps are given the opportunity to join our State Liaison in advocating directly at the state capitol to legislators. We typically have the GA choose an ASMSU advocacy point of relevance. This was unfortunately cut short this year due to coronavirus, but I am excited to continue it! We would also continue regular efforts of letter writing, emailing, and of course the Gov Affairs department regular meetings with legislators.
